Edward H. Klopp, M.D., Medical Director of PeninsulaWound & HyperbaricCenter, recently became an accreditation surveyor for UHMS, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. He joins center Safety Director Nancyellen Morris, LPN, CHT who became a surveyor last summer and participated in her first survey in October. Dr. Klopp took part in a surveyor training course offered at the UHMS 45th Annual Scientific Meeting held inPhoenix,Arizona last month.
The UHMS is the only national accreditation organization for hyperbaric facilities and is recognized as such by the Joint Commission. Each UHMS Accreditation Survey is performed by a 3-member team, comprised of a physician, a Certified Hyperbaric RN and a Certified Hyperbaric Technician. Most surveyors take part in surveys conducted within their own geographical region, but may also take part in surveys in other areas. Recently some third party payors and governmental entities have begun to require UHMS accreditation as a precondition to allow payment for hyperbaric services. Currently, only 10 to 15% of U.S. facilities are accredited, but, with the reimbursement changes on the horizon, the demand for surveys is expected to peak dramatically.
Peninsula Wound & Hyperbaric Center is proud to have two UHMS surveyors within its ranks. Dr. Klopp and Nancyellen hope to have the opportunity to serve on the same survey team some time later this year.
Congratulations, Dr. Klopp!
